I have travelled many times to this area of the world since I was 18, trips including Thailand, Laos, Malaysia and Singapore. The first time I went to Thailand I was on a train from Bangkok to Surat Thani, I got talking to a young boy aged 16 who worked on the train selling drinks and snacks about football and about where he lived etc. he was a massive Liverpool fan. When it was time for me to say goodbye to him I gave him my Liverpool football shirt that was just rolled up in my backpack. The expression on his face was one of sheer joy; I have never seen someone so happy. He took the shirt in to his little cabin where he worked from and folded it like it was Christmas day.
Since then, every time I have been out to this part of the world I have given my football shirt(s) away. Last year (November 2014) I travelled around Thailand for 2 & 1/2 weeks. Before I left the UK I did a bit of a collection of football tops, I took 6 Liverpool shirts and 6 Everton shirts with me. These were given out to local children on the Island of Koh Jum, which has parts of the Island still trying to get back on its feet after the 2004 Tsunami.
In January 2016 I am flying to Bangkok and spending 3 weeks out there, haven’t got a clue what my itinerary is yet. But this time I am planning an even bigger shirt collection and I am hoping to find a charity that works with young people in South East Asia to help me as well. I plan to fill a whole back pack with football shirt but not just Liverpool or Everton shirts can be any team international or club (not too sure on Man Utd!) aged from 0-16 years.
So if anyone has any old football shirts that can be passed on to someone who is less fortunate than ourselves, please pass them on to me and I will make sure they go to a good home on my next trip to Asia.
